The success of Port Elizabeth deli and coffee shop, Urban Espress Coffee Co., lies in its combining awesome food with excellent service, while keeping the entire mix very simple and down-to-earth. Situated in the new centre on the corner of Villiers Road and 6th Avenue, Walmer, Urban Espress is central, making it an easy place to pop in, have a delicious cappuccino or Americano (for only R15 and R10 respectively) and then be on your way.
What makes Urban Espress particularly interesting is that its savoury menu consists solely of gourmet sandwiches. These are made using the freshest ingredients and breads, and come in a couple of variations. Although the menu is small, there is definitely something for everyone and all sandwiches (made on ciabatta or rye) are only R30, despite being ample portions.
There is an array of coffees and teas on offer, which are all freshly brewed. The smell of the roasted coffee beans permeates the entire restaurant as the barista is located within the dining area, creating cappuccino art in front of your eyes.
There is a selection of fresh pastries, cookies and cupcakes available within Urban Espress. However, the popular Pastryworx is situated right next door to this eatery and customers are invited to choose from a huge variety of really special treats there. Although these change every day, they usually include giant meringues, cheesecake, millionaire’s shortbread (shortbread biscuit topped with sticky fudge and a hardened layer of dark chocolate), brownies, carrot cake, carrot balls, and much more.
The décor is a funky mix of rustic wood, bare brickwork and plenty of glass and light. This makes it comfortable, modern, warm and inviting. The comfortable L-shaped couch in the corner is the perfect place to catch up with an old friend or to check your emails in peace.
The service is really outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable staff members make you feel welcome and relaxed, while the food comes out quickly and the coffees are served piping hot.
Urban Espress has a winning formula and, while very popular, remains attentive and committed to personal service.
