Dessie’s

Although having been around for some time, Dessie’s has continued to evolve; delighting the senses and giving the patrons of Port Elizabeth something really special every time they visit. The  secret to their success is, undoubtedly, the fresh flavours, the enormous variety on the menu, the distinctly healthy options available and the setting in which diners are made to feel comfortable, serene and a little pampered.

The first Dessie’s was established at the Bloomingdales Centre between ninth and tenth avenues, Walmer. A bubbling water feature, lush garden and open, airy restaurant area makes this an irresistible spot for a languorous breakfast, business lunch or a glass of wine with old friends. The service is efficient and friendly, which always makes coming here that much more enjoyable. This restaurant is large and vibrant, but retains an elegant charm with old-fashioned features.

Dessie’s at the Tin House on Cuyler in Cuyler Street, Central, offers something completely different. There are the same scrumptious dishes and friendly faces, but this is a small coffee shop and restaurant situated within a historical house and neighbourhood. White wooden walls and a small, sunny courtyard give this venue a quaint charm. The walls are laden with paintings and sketches that are for sale, and the small dining area is flooded with light and fresh air. There is a small shop attached in which upmarket crafts (such a boutique baby wear and jewellery) is on sale.

There are often art exhibitions at the Cuyler Street Dessie’s, inviting art enthusiasts and social butterflies to enjoy the top-class coffees, wines and snacks with a touch of culture.

Dessie’s is known and loved for their famous sweet treats and baked goods. The deli at both outlets allows customers to buy fresh items like muffins, scones, tarts, meringues, biscuits (including the biggest choc-chip cookies imaginable), cheeses, fresh pastas, dips and more. The menu is varied, offering breakfasts, lunches, kiddies’ meals and platters that can be ordered for special events.

Dessie’s is fully licensed, and boasts an impressive wine list with some of the finest South African labels available. These include reds, whites, rosés and sparklings.

This restaurant and coffee shop is ideal for celebrations (such as end-of-year functions) and the menu is flexible enough to cater to all preferences. However, special platters and meals can be ordered, if necessary.

The variety of deli items make for fabulous gifts for those back home, giving everyone a taste of your memorable Dessie’s experience. If you are planning a holiday in PE, find an hotel in Port Elizabeth or if you prefer to cater for yourself, see self catering option in PE.
