It’s marketed as a three-day boutique running holiday in the midst of unfenced coastal paradise.
The event usually covers the distance between Kei Mouth and Hole-in-the-Wall, an unmarked route of 112 km divided into daily distances of 44.2 km, 35.2 km and 34 km over a mixed terrain of beach, grassy headlands, coastal forest and rock. There are a few river crossings thrown in for good measure (yes, you will need to swim).
2017 is the first year in which prize money is awarded to the first male and female to break the records of the Wild Coast WildRun.
Wildrun doesn’t only explore the Wild Coast. There are other Wildruns in the remote mountains of Lesotho, the Richtersveld desert, and the bushveld of Mapungubwe. Each is a unique experience, and limited to 80 runners. There are daily cut-off times.
The WildRuns usually sell out in under 10 minutes, and are considered one of the best trail running events in South Africa.
Your fee includes a map with clearly marked check points, rendezvous points and features along the route.
R250 000 has gone to local schools and orphanages in the areas of WildRuns as a result of the runs.

The Wild Coast Hotel-Hopping Walk is a luxury slackpacking trail on the Wild Coast’s lower end in the Eastern Cape along long stretches of beach, over gentle hills, through secluded bays, estuaries and across headlands.
Day one: Kob Inn to Mazeppa Bay, 6 km – a short stretch over sand dunes
Day two: Mazeppa Bay to Wavecrest, 21 km – the longest stretch over sandy beaches with swimming along the way
Day three: Wavecrest to Seagulls/Trennerys, 12 km – along grassy paths above the rocky coast, crossing the river Kobonqaba and sighting a shipwreck
Day four: Trennerys to Morgan Bay, 14 km – a pont crossing of the River Kei followed by a coastal forest walk
Day five: Morgan Bay to Haga Haga, 14 km – along cliffs and over shell-infused beaches with one river crossing at Double Mouth

The homes of Summerstrand are unique. Many of them have earned ‘mansion’ status, and their architecture is made all the more unique by their designers’ aiming to make the most of the views of the beach. Glass, Perspex and windows that occupy almost every possible angle characterise these houses, many of which have been converted into guesthouses and Bed & Breakfast establishments.
The beaches will certainly lure just about any tourist, as it does the locals. Beaches within the suburb include Pollock Beach and Hobie Beach, which are both extremely popular. The Indian Ocean waters are far warmer than those of the Atlantic Ocean, making the swimming conditions in Port Elizabeth ideal, even when the weather begins to cool down for autumn. Surfers love the varied surfing conditions of these beaches, as they are suitable for pros and novices alike.
Summerstrand is also known for being the home of the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Centre. This complex boasts a huge variety of restaurants, ranging from family hotspots (like Wimpy, Steers, Dulcé Café and The Spur) to more formal options (like Squires). There is an African market that sells a range of mementoes, clothing, shoes, accessories, and goods for the home. There are also adventure shops, boutiques, jewellers and more at The Boardwalk. The casino is sizeable and provides the full range of tables and machines for the dedicated gambler or those just wanting to have a little fun. It is tastefully decorated, reflecting the glitz and glamour of a Vegas hotspot without negotiating on class and style. The bowling alley remains a firm favourite of the Boardwalk, as do the pool tables right next door.
The Summerstrand Village Shopping Centre is a small, but inclusive, mall that is conveniently situated for locals and visitors alike. Banks, a Pick ‘n Pay, post office, chemist, coffee shop, restaurant, take-away outlets, boutiques and more all ensure that this is a one-stop-shop for those in the area.
Hobie Beach is not only popular for its idyllic water and white sand. There is also a grassy picnic spot, rock pools in which little ones can play more safely, and a complex of restaurants, bars and an ice cream shop. Whether you are looking for a tasty treat from KFC, a reasonably priced meal from Angelo’s or a more sophisticated meal at Blue Waters Café, all of these options promise gorgeous views of the sea as well as of Shark Rock Pier, which takes one right into the ocean for magnificent views. Barney’s is a popular bar, with a deck overlooking the ocean and a laid-back atmosphere.
The famous Cape Recife Lighthouse is right on the outskirts of Summerstrand. This lighthouse is over 130 years old and is part of a larger reserve. The walk through the reserve is simply beautiful. Look out for bottlenose dolphins (especially in the morning and late afternoon) as well as whales during the period of July to December.

The purpose of this facility is primarily to uplift the local community, giving people (especially mothers) the opportunity to improve their own lives, gain training and educate their children. The attached primary school is, therefore, of utmost importance to the local families, many of whom cannot afford school fees. Therefore, the goods that are available at this museum (arts, crafts, clothing and accessories) have all been made by these children’s mothers, and the proceeds go towards the education of the little ones.
There is also a massive drive on educating the local families about HIV and AIDS. This requires that trained counsellors work on a volunteer basis.
The mothers were recently asked how they would like to invest the funds raised through the museum, and they decided on vegetable tunnels to facilitate the healthy lifestyle that children, families and those living with HIV and AIDS require. So, Sukume now boasts several tunnels in which they grow fresh vegetables too.
The museum is small, but includes exhibits of a typical shack, artwork created by local artists and photographs that tell intriguing tales of times past.
A formal tour can be arranged, and can include exciting features such as:
- A donkey ride through the township with a tour guide
- A taste of local Xhosa dishes
- A visit to a shebeen (a traditional pub)
- Xhosa performances put on by the local community (at a small extra fee)
- Tours of the school and the Human Dignity Centre
- An explanation of some of the main Xhosa customs (such as lobola, ancestor worship, and so on)
The way of life in a township has become a veritable South African culture in its own right. However, these informal settlements were established as a result of the Apartheid regime that once governed the country. Therefore, the tours and information provided outline this way of governing and how it shaped the country.

Military Path
Taking only about 40 minutes to complete, this is an easy walk that extends from Red Coat Lane and into the forests. It is about two kilometres long, and was once used by the British soldiers as they made their ways between Fort Hare and Fort Michel. Hangman’s Tree is a popular feature along Red Coat Lane, and is rumoured to have been used for any soldiers trying to desert their mission.
The Bluff
This trail is a firm favourite amongst those that love the flowers and natural vegetation of the Eastern Cape. As you follow the path around The Bluff, the proteas, Watsonias and Satyrium orchids delight the senses (specific flowers depending on the time of year, of course). This walk takes about 45 minutes to complete and is easy to manage.
Madonna and Child Falls
This is an extremely popular attraction, promising magnificent views and very rewarding walk. The outcrop on the face of the waterfalls has a feature resembling the famous piece of art entitled “Mother and Child”, which is also rather fun to see. The walk features a relatively steep downhill from Wolf Ridge Road, and then a scenic portion through the forest. If accessed from the Main Road, the walk is longer, but the downhill is avoided.
Kettlespout Falls
For a fantastic display of the power of water, the walk down to Kettlespout Falls is a must. The water of these falls is known to create magnificent sprays, sometimes reaching impressive heights of up to five metres.
When going on a hike in Hogsback, as with any other destination, it is important that you wear comfortable shoes, apply plenty of high-factor sunscreen, keep hydrated and carry a mobile phone so that you are able to call someone if you find yourself in a precarious situation. Winters become very cold in this part of the world, with snowfall around July.

The climate of this part of South Africa is particularly temperate. Summers are hot and slightly humid, while winters are cool, but mild. Summer highs seldom exceed 32 degrees Celsius, while winter daytime lows usually hover around 15 to 18 degrees along the coast. The Addo Elephant National Park
Home to about 500 free-roaming African Elephants; as well as lion, buffalo, zebra, ostrich, warthog, plenty of antelope species and the famous endemic flightless dung beetle; Addo is a wonderful way to enjoy the abundance of the Eastern Cape. Self-driven tours as well as formal safaris are available, and there are a number of fantastic observation points around the park and its watering holes. Tiffindell Ski Resort
This fully equipped ski and snowboarding resort is situated in the Highlands of the province, where wintertime snow is abundant. There is also man-made snow to ensure fabulous skiing opportunities for as long as possible. Other local activities in the winter include tobogganing and snow fights. Summer is equally exciting and visitors can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing and more. The resort has world-class facilities; including conference facilities, a ski school, ski shop, restaurant and accommodation.
Storms River and Tsitsikamma
The exquisite area of Storms River and Tsitsikamma showcases the natural splendour of the province to perfection. The region is characterised by dense forests, which adorn mountains and valleys. There is more to this town than surfing, of course. You will be spoilt for choice by the selection of available rooms in Jeffreys Bay and it has an arty, relaxed vibe that is quite unique, making it a really appealing retreat.
Bloukrans Bungy
As the highest commercial bungy jump (at a breath-taking 216 metres high), Bloukrans Bridge promises even the bravest of visitors an experience that will test the limits of their adrenalin. In addition to a traditional bungy jump, there are walking tours that take place on a pathway suspended under the bridge, which offers magnificent views with a distinct sense of excitement. 1. Natural Wealth
The Eastern Cape has been blessed with breath-taking stretches of coastline, dense forests, rolling hills, and unspoilt grasslands that stretch as far as the eye can see. Many of these are occupied by wildlife that ranges from the Big 5 (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinos) to the tiniest of birds and insects. These can be enjoyed in the countryside surrounding the major towns or in formal nature reserves.
2. The Holiday Vibe
Because the Eastern Cape remains relatively quiet in terms of tourism, it is a fabulous retreat for busy travellers. Out of peak summer season and in the smaller towns, accommodation is almost always available. Hopewell Conservation Estate is a nature reserve and a housing estate situated along old Cape Road in Greenbushes (near St Albans). This means that it is only a few minutes from the city centre, while still being nestled within the unspoilt serenity of the bushveld. It has been designed to be the homely retreat for busy professionals and community leaders that appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of the Eastern Cape countryside.
The urban nature reserve covers some 3 000 hectares of what was once farmland and is now under the conservation management of Shamwari Wildlife.
New mountain biking and trail running routes were established throughout Hopewell in December 2012 and have been remarkably popular amongst local sportsmen and –women. These are safe and accessible, situated within the secure wilderness that is so beautiful. Breathe in the fresh country air and feel the sunshine on your back as you negotiate these fun trails with friends and family. Along the way, look out for eland, kudu, red hartebeest, springbok, Cape mountain zebra and plenty of birdlife (of which there are about 130 different species).
The vegetation at Hopewell is also remarkable, with four of the Eastern Cape’s seven biomes to be found within the reserve. It includes grassy fynbos, subtropical thicket and wetlands. This variety makes Hopewell the ideal habitat for a number of wildlife species.
There are three trails, each of which offers a unique cycling experience. These are 1) a 12 kilometre social ride, 2) a 35 kilometre intermediate trail and 3) a 50 kilometre option for cyclists who want to challenge themselves and test their technical skills.
The gravel roads are of a good quality and have been built along the natural contours of the land. This gives riders a very natural experience of the topography and geography of the Eastern Cape landscape. Soak-aways have been implemented at regular points so that these roads are manageable in any weather conditions.

It was the perfect to sit, sip your coffee and wait to see monkeys with blue balls jumping through the trees and stop to watch us. As soon as we were out the resort, you could turn and walk right down onto the beach which unfolded for miles to the left banked by tall sand dunes and all the way to the right before sand dunes and a river came into view. My husband and I found a deserted kayak beside the river and decided it must’ve been Buccaneers’’ backpackers. We assumed they wouldn’t mind and set off paddling slowly inland. The river took us past a proud eagle perched atop a tree waiting for his moment to dive for a fish. Waders made their way along the edge dipping their long legs into the mud and looking for food. We floated over shallow sandbanks and past closed up holiday homes. All about us the hills of Eastern Cape vegetation unfolded before us. The deeper into the ravine we paddled, the less we could hear the ocean. All we heard were birds who seemed totally oblivious to us.
The next day, we joined a Cinsta Horse Rehabilitation centre for a horse trail along the beach and through the bush. There were about eight of us including the leader and volunteers working at the centre. The trail took us down the hill from the farm, past thorny bushes which later made me itch and all the way until we could see the coast. We passed huts with washing hanging up to dry in the sun, rounded hills with high green grass and a valley of trees, palms and groves. Each one of our horses had been rescued and rehabilitated at the centre and were now shiny, strong and healthy and moved with incredible easy and enthusiasm onto the rocky past of the beach sticking close to the dunes. We trotted past sunbathers, fishermen and children playing the sand. We took a chance to gallop unrestrained down the long stretch of sand. I felt free and afraid all at once, plus my buttocks took strain.
After a long day on the horses, I could think of nothing better than hitting the waves with my surfboard. There weren’t a lot of waves, but they were there. It was somewhat messy so I struggled to get out to the backline. I also hesitated to go too further out as this beach had no lifeguards and sharks were known to come near to river mouths. The water was much warmer than Cape Town’s beaches and I could have stayed in there for the greater part of the day. Our New Year’s Eve was spent at a Mayan party at backpackers on the hill overlooking the river. We had our shoulders and faces painted and danced beside the pool, out on the sand and beside the sea. Aside from the all people on the beach during high season, it was one of the most unspoilt, rural places I have ever visited in South Africa and I sincerely hope it keeps its rural charm for many years to come.

When, finally visible to the human eye, standing atop the wooden walkway & facing the ocean, with the North-Westerly wind blowing steadily against your back you bear witness to one of the most magnificent right-hand point break waves that this world has to offer. This guide to Surfing in Jeffreys Bay is for those not quite ready to take on the perfect walls of water that rip like lighting over razor-sharp rocks of Supertubes; it’s for the surfers who, in my mind, are still having the most fun – the beginners. So, sorted by skill level – here is a guide to surfing in J-Bay.
- Main Beach (Dolphin Beach): This is where many people have tried their hand at learning surfing – this is by far the safest beach and has soft sand beneath you at all times. Unfortunately this beach has terrible waves to learn on as most of them dump (break quickly) on you without much lead in time and time to ride the foam after.
- Moving along from Main Beach you may be tempted to try “Kitchen Windows” a spot just right of Main Beach where you can paddle out a little further to a spot that has a small reef break – be careful of the reef, but this is generally safe. I would take my twelve-year-old sister out here.
- “Beach Break” – just opposite the Checkers Shopping Centre, while some would argue, correctly so, that it can get hairy at times I believe this is your next progression – lots of white sand to land on and more often than not, gentle waves. Watch out for the fisherman however!
- Kabeljous Beach is pretty far out and on the other end of town but its safe and easy for the beginners. Take a friend along.
- Albatross – usually un-crowded and situated on Kabeljous Beach. I wouldn’t describe it as tame but it needs a combination of conditions to really work.
- If you are comfortable with these then the next step is Point. This is a reef break with fairly gently breaking waves that are incredible to ride. It’s one of my favourite breaks in J-Bay is just down the line from Supertubes separated only by…
- Tubes this reef break is between the Point and Supertubes, named after its consistent ability to throw the lip over and create excellent but short – tubes, a hollow in-between the face and lip of the wave that surfers love being in. It’s extremely close to sharp reef and dangerous so best not try this if you’re a beginner.
- “Magnatubes” – one of the heavier waves in Jbay and has a tendency to become very big and in turn, dangerous. Best left to experienced surfers.
- “Boneyards” – Not much else needs to be mentioned. Great wave, which breaks left and right above Supertubes, but in shallow water. One of the few waves along this stunning coastline that breaks to the left.
- Finally, Supertubes. No more hostile than any of prior three in terms of pure natural danger, this wave, ironically because of its beauty, has attracted a strong sense of localism – local surfers here have been rumoured to take the mistakes of junior surfers here quite seriously and you could land up in hot water of you get in their way, so be-careful if you find yourself unable to resist the waves seemingly endless ride.
Enjoy your adventure and remember that the best time to visit Jeffrey’s Bay, for surfing, is in the South African winter during the months of April until October.
